Pellet Stoves

Posted on Jan 02, 2010 under Bedroom, Home Improvement | No Comment

More and more people are looking at all their options when it comes time to heat the home. With the rising cost of energy, it is no wonder that finding the most efficient and cost effective is now a priority for many people. If you love having a fire burning but want to enjoy it without paying a fortune, there is a great solution in a pellet stove.

One of the problems with a traditional fireplace is that while the wood smells wonderful, it also creates pollution. The problem with a gas fireplace is that although it looks beautiful and can add heat to the home, gas can be very costly. Therefore, if you want to enjoy the warmth and ambience that a fireplace creates, you might think about buying a pellet stove.

This particular type of stove was first introduced to the market about 10 years ago. Since that time, people are finding that a pellet stove offers a number of outstanding benefits that are simply hard to pass up. First, the fuel for this type of stove is literally pellets that are made from recycled wood shavings, sawdust, peanut or walnut shells, and other types of materials.

These pellets are environmentally safe, which means that waste that is typically dumped into landfills is recycled and used to create energy. Since the pellets are tightly compressed, all moisture is removed. In fact, the moisture level is typically reduced to 8% or less. When you compare that to wood, which ranges from 20% to 30%, you can see that because the pellets are much dryer, they will produce far more heat.

The pellet stove also offers consistency. The pellets naturally burn much cleaner and efficiently than what you would get with wood. When buying an EPA-approved pellet stove, you will find that they only carry 5 grams of particulates in the smoke per hour whereas a traditional wood stove burns from 30 to 50.

Additionally, the wood stoves used back in the 1970s converted up to 60% of their fuel to heat but with a pellet stove, that number now rises to as high as 90%. In many cases, the heat extracted from this type of stove is so much, it can be vented going through the wall horizontally rather than up through a standard chimney.

Another use advantage in that burning wood in a traditional fireplace creates creosote, which is a soot-like substance that can create fire hazards. However, with a pellet stove, the amount of creosote produced is far less, meaning you are burning a safer fire while still enjoying the heat and beauty.

Finally, when it comes to price, it is true that pellets cost more than wood but remember that the weight measurements are different and the benefits are greater. Therefore, while you might spend a little upfront to get a pellet stove in place, you will be helping to save the environment and enjoying a clean-burning fire.

Pillows and Canopies

If you want to enhance your bedroom, an excellent way to change its appearance and work within most budgets is to work with pillows or a canopy. You can use a few simple pillows with a pop of color, muted toned pillows for a more subdued look, or go over the top with lots of pillows of various colors and textures. If you want a clean and chic look, try stacking pillows vertically, graduating the sizes. For example, place the larger pillows in the back and then top those with smaller pillows. Finally, in front of the smaller pillows, you can place a neck roll for a great look. Then, to add interest, choose pillows of various colors, textures, and embellishments. You might consider mixing checks with strips and floral designs as well.

A great idea with pillows is to create a European look. You can accomplish this by placing three European pillows sitting up behind two standard pillows. Then, choose a rectangular shaped pillow to stand in between the two standard pillows. For more interest, place a few smaller pillows on either side of the rectangular pillow. Great choices for pillows in this scenario would be pillows with needlepoint floral designs, pillowcases and pillows with embroidery, ruffled shams, and even chenille.

For a more casual approach, place two standard pillows on the back of the bed. Then, add a 26-inch European pillow in between the two pillows but turn it so one of the corners is sticking up. Next, add a boudoir pillow and perhaps one small pillow in front. For the bedding, be sure you choose loose plaids or checks. The goal is to have a clean and finished look while keeping it relaxed and casual.

Just remember that the key with pillows is to be creative and throw out the old rules that you cannot mix stripes with floral designs. Rather than the design, you want to focus more on the color palette. For example, if you have a room done in white, pink, mauve, and olive green, try to find a few large pillows with a white, pink, mauve, and olive green stripe or plaid. Then, to complement those pillows, find smaller ones in a floral design that have some or all of the same colors plus a few tones within the same color scheme. You can then add a solid mauve pillow with olive green embroidery and a solid olive green pillow with pink and mauve tassels to complete the look.

For canopies, you can build or purchase different canopy holders if you do not have a canopy bed. These holders are installed directly onto the wall or the ceiling. Typically, a sheer curtain panel is used by draping it through the ring and then allowing the fabric to cascade around the front of the bed and then sweeping onto the floor. If you want a glamorous and sophisticated look, choose sheers that are white, ivory, or soft colors. On the other hand, if you prefer something more rich and elegant, then you could choose dark sheers or even tapestry or velvet material. Whether working with pillows or canopies, do not be afraid to go outside the box to try different things. You will be amazed at how adding pillows and/or a canopy to your bedroom will completely change the entire look and feel of the room.

Kid Rooms

As your child grows from being a baby to being old enough to leave home, they will go through numerous changes. One of those changes has to do with their bedroom. Once your kid is moved into a regular bed, you should start planning for the first change. You want your kid’s room to be fun, energetic, and a place they will enjoy being.

If you have a one-year-old, you want a room that is a little more mature than that of a baby’s room but not quite too mature. Using a color scheme that is bright and offers a nice variety will keep your kid’s interest best. Perfect colors choices include bright blues, greens, reds, yellows, oranges, and pinks. Rather than using an oversized comforter, make the bed soft, cozy, and fun. To achieve this, many vintage bedspreads are a perfect option. Although the themed comforters are cute, your child will quickly outgrow it. For this reason, a simple bedspread that is accented with colorful pillows will last longer.

If your kid has outgrown the cutesy dresser, consider painting it a different color to match the new room. Add new hardware and the look will be complete. Even a changing table can be updated. For example, create colorful curtains for the shelves and use them for storing toys that your kid can reach. By removing the foam-changing top, you will have additional surface space for toys.

To give your kid a great place to sit, add a small child-size chair, also in bright colors matching the room. In most cases, these chairs can be used for many years. If you like, a glider, or overstuffed adult-size chair will also work, providing you with a place to sit and read to your child while also giving them a place to relax.

If you want some colorful pictures, you might consider fun pictures from magazines that can be cut out and then made into a decoupage masterpiece. You can use a small white piece of poster board for the background and then use various colored frames, again blending perfectly with the room.

When it comes to window treatments, you might consider using solid colored panels and then a small valence to pull all the colors together. This allows you to use the panels for many years while only changing out the valence. For extra fun, add specialized curtain rods or tiebacks that coordinate with all the other changes you have made. Your kid will love the new “grown up” look while still feeling like mom and dad’s little angel.

Bedroom Remodeling

Changing the look of a bedroom is a fun and easy project to do. With so many possibilities, you can completely change the look as often as you like. One option that is probably the most popular and creates the most dramatic results is using fabric. Unfortunately, too often when people are changing a bedroom, they think of paint, wallpaper, and even new furniture but often overlook fabric, which can make an incredible difference. By using a variety of fabric textures, patterns, and colors, your bedroom will have a brand new look.

Before you choose your paint or anything else for your new bedroom, pick out your fabric. The following guidelines will give you an idea of which fabrics to choose for creating a specific look although you can do whatever you like:

* Romantic (feminine) – Soft textured fabrics, light or pastel colors, flowers, gingham, ruffles, and lace
* Romantic (couples) – Multiple textures, warm earth tone, or bold, rich colors, plaids, stripes, occasional oversized flowers, ethnic themed (Moroccan, Asian)
* Elegant – Leather, chenille, tapestry, deep, warm colors, paisley, stripes, oversized pillows
* Contemporary – Leather, vinyl, cottons, sharp, edgy patterns, black, white, red, deep blue colors
* Country/Nature – Multiple fabrics, plaids, checkerboard, animals, nautical, whites, blues, yellows, and greens

Remember that mixing patterns is perfect for any dcor and any style. Even changing a duvet and curtains can change the bedroom’s entire appearance. Remove an old-fashioned bedspread and dreary, outdated curtains and make a change. For example, using a white down comforter and white duvet with a red gingham pattern on the edge, coupled with large patterned white and red flowered curtains and a white and red gingham cornice, then adding a solid red chair with white pillows with a red starburst design in the center, would update your room beautifully. Another inexpensive way to update your bedroom is to change out your picture frames and group your pictures all on one wall. Rather than making all the frames the same, use a variety of styles and colors (wood, black, iron). For a country look, hang a set of larger pictures with a long ribbon that coordinates with your room and hang from the top of the wall.

A great facelift that is not too expensive and can be installed easily with the help of a friend is to add crown molding. You can purchase molding in a number of styles and heights, which will actually help make your room look taller and larger. If your bedroom currently has wallpaper, remove it, paint the walls a new, fresh color, and then finish it off with either crown molding or a nice border. Other inexpensive ideas for remodeling your bedroom include adding pillow shams and other accent pillows to your bed. These covers and pillows can be purchased or made. If you need a headboard, rather than spend hundreds of dollars, visit a junk yard or home improvement store to find a six-panel door. If possible, try to find a door without the doorknob hole cut out. Buy two sturdy legs that have screws, which can simply be screwed into a hole drilled in the side of the door.

Finally, you can paint the door a solid color, paint each panel with two or more colors, give the door an antique finish, or stain the door. Once complete, the door can be used as a headboard as is, resting on the legs or you can add a decorative touch with a painted design, add a stencil, or stamp design or decoupage the panels. Little touches can make the room look entirely different.
